Finally, the next full-length mix is available from Jukebox Heart. It’s a great mix of styles and moods, and it really reflects what’s been playing at the house, in the truck and in the office lately. Pay attention for clues in the mix about the title…

Starting with this issue of Jukebox Heart, you will be able to download artwork to print for a jewel-case package; a CD label, tray card and 2-panel booklet. It’s in the zipfile downloadable HERE.

In addition to the new mp3 mix, there is a new Press To Play uploaded, featuring a vintage radio program in three parts, from February 2001, when the world was a different place – or was it? The full WZBC experience is in place, including the funky transmitter noises that plagued us at the station for years.

Also, four new raveclips are up, including videos from Baxter, Bruce Gilbert (THE Bruce gilbert, of Wire fame), Spacer, and a video from recent Screamer of the Day band, The Dining Rooms. You can only access these features by visiting the blog at JukeboxHeart.com.

Finally, join me in celebrating the first anniversary of Jukebox Heart! Our first post went up on August 16, 2007…

Ballboy – One Sailor Was Waving
Club Anthems CD – SL Records 2000

I keep finding Ballboy albums whenever I go scouting around for unusual stuff; this is the third album of theirs I’ve picked up. They follow in a long tradition of Scottish pop-post-punk bands and vaguely remind me of Josef K. Yes, that *is* high praise, isn’t it… :)

New Order – Ceremony
Single – Factory Records 1981

First, let me tell you to click on the Factory Records link above. It will take you to a wonderful comprehensive discography website of the famous label.

Finally the details about this confusing single. It was the first single by the regrouped New Order, following Ian Curtis’ suicide. But there are two versions released by New Order, as well as versions originally performed by Joy Division. Two Joy Division live recordings were released on separate compilation albums. New Order released the song as a single twice, first in March 1981 and then a different recording featuring new member Gillian Gilbert in September 1981.

Joy Division created the song, with lyrics written by Ian Curtis. There are two recorded versions of the song by Joy Division. The first available on the Still album is from their final concert at High Hall, Birmingham University on May 2nd 1980, 16 days before Curtis’ suicide. The second available on the Heart and Soul 4 CD box set is from a rehearsal tape made in April/May 1980. In both recordings the vocals are partially inaudible.

As New Order, their first release was the single Ceremony. The two songs, “Ceremony” and “In a Lonely Place”, were created by Joy Division and the New Order recordings were similar, except with Bernard Sumner singing the lyrics. Sumner said that he had to put the Ceremony rehearsal tape as sung by Curtis through a graphic equalizer in order to determine the lyrics. In March 1981, the first version of “Ceremony”. featured here, was released on Factory Records (FAC 33). Martin Hannett produced the record. Peter Saville designed the sleeve graphics. The 7″ record was issued in a stamped gold-bronze sleeve. The 12″ sleeve was a completely separate design: same typography on a green background.

In September 1981, “Ceremony” was re-recorded. Gillian Gilbert played guitar on the recording, just before she formally joined the group. Martin Hannett produced the record and it was re-issued as a 12″ single only, with the same catalogue number (FAC 33). The original is approximately 4:34 minutes in length while the re-recording is 4:23. The re-recorded version was used on all subsequent compilations until the 2005 compilation Singles. There are differences in the recordings. The original, my favorite, has a more “Joy Division” sound, with throbbing bass, distorted guitar, spacey vocals, and solid drums also contributing a wash of cymbals. In the re-recording the bass is diminished, cymbals restrained, and the vocals are “drier”. The guitar sounds are less insistent, and the drum hits in the opening verse are dramatically panned in the mix. There is a greater contrast between verse and chorus, with the latter sections reaching some of the emotional pitch of the original.

The sleeve was changed to a light cream with a vertical blue stripe, though with the same motif and typography as the original 12″ single. To further add to the confusion, after the supply of the re-designed sleeve ran out, copies of the originally-designed sleeve were used for the second recording. Aa a result, the two versions of the song were packaged indiscriminately in the original sleeve. However, the run-groove notation differ according to the version. The original says “Watching love grow forever”, while the re-recording says “This is why events unnerve me” – both lyrics in “Ceremony”.

Jesu – Star
Silver EP CD – Hydra Head Records 2006

Jesu is an experimental rock band formed in 2003 by Justin Broadrick following the breakup of Godflesh. Jesu was the name of the last song on the final Godflesh release, Hymns, and Broadrick decided to adopt it as the name of his new project.

Jesu’s sound is heavily layered and textured, drawing from and incorporating an eclectic mix of influences, ranging from ambient music, post-metal and drone doom, to shoegazing, downtempo and industrial music. Their recent releases have been described as “avant-pop” and avant-garde doom.

Tarentel – Bump Past Cut Up Through Windows
We Move Through Weather – Temporary Residence CD 2004

From the Bay Area, Tarentel emerged from the latter half of the Post-Rock phenomenon and remain active with many projects in the works. Currently, the records to seek are their mammoth 4-LP magnum opus, “Ghetto Beats on the Surface of the Sun”. Grab it before it sells out!

The Books – None But The Shining Hour
Lost and Safe CD – Tomlab Records 2005

Formed in New York City in 2000, when Zammuto and De Jong were neighbors in Inwood, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan. Their music combines elements of folk & acoustic and fuses it with electronic undertones. The two members do all of the group’s production and mastering work on their home computers.

Cex & Nice Nice – Los Angeles
Actual Fucking CD – Automation Records 2006

Cex is mostly the work of Rjyan Kidwell although two additional members, Cale Parks and Rjyan’s wife, Roby Newton have appeared on several releases and continue to do so. Cale Parks is also a member of Joan of Arc, another Jukebox Heart favorite, and maybe one day, one of yours, too…

Mouse On Mars – Sui Shop
Autoditacker CD – Thrill Jockey 1997

Mouse on Mars formed in 1993 when Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner (of Köln and Düsseldorf, respectively) met at a health food store. And we’ve been following them ever since. They played live with Stereolab in Boston in support of the Dots and Loops tour. Both play in a multiude of other groups.

Air – La Femme d’Argent
Moon Safari CD – Source 1997

In 1998, Air gave the world MOON SAFARI. Now, in 2008, Air want to know what you did with it. They are collecting your Moon Safari Stories and pinning them to a map on an exclusive website. It’s all very romantic, and such an idea couldn’t possibly be visitied on a more romantic and legendary album. Go tell them your story…

Capitol K – Anon
Island Row CD – XL Recordings 2002

Caitol K is Kristian Robinson, a true citizen of the world. As such, he brings a HUGE array of influences to his music. He’s been busy for ten years, but his music is new to me. Perhaps you’re familiar??

Eyeless In Gaza – To Cry Mercy
Plague of Years CD – Sub Rosa 2006

A legacy band in the world of Jukebox Heart, the wealth of music provided by Martyn Bates and Peter Becker just cannot be overstated. This is a collection of tracks from a very wide range of their career. All tracks have been previously released, which is a little disappointing, but many of the tracks are seldom heard. Definitely worth seeking out, even for the most complete fans…

Drowsy – Bright Dawn
Growing Green CD – Fat Cat 2005

He’s from Finland and was signed to FatCat in 2001. He’s compared to The Pastels and Galaxis 500 along with Syd Barrett, but I’d also add Nick Drake and a little Billy Bragg as well.

Lullatone – Pitter Patter Interlude
Little Songs About Raindrops CD – Audio Dregs 2004

Lullatone is a popular music group based in Nagoya, Japan, whose music is characterized by an innocent, child-like quality and spare, lo-fi sounds. Although the group refers to their style of music as “pajama-pop”, it is commonly included in such musical subgenres as Twee pop, Indie pop and Electronica. It draws influence from such diverse sources as Bossa Nova, French pop music of the 1960s, children’s songs and Musique concrète. They are simply one of the most charming bands in the world. The track presented here is kind of a funny novelty and completely different from the rest of the tracks. This is a band to love.

Beequeen – On The Road To Everywhere
The Bodyshop CD – Important Records 2005

Beequeen is a collaboration between Dutch musicians Freek Kinkelaar and Frans de Waard, who work primarily in drone and dream pop/ambient music. They have released material on prominent independent labels such as Important Records, Korm Plastics, Staalplaat, Ant-Zen, RRRecords, and Mille Plateaux and are one of the most confounding bands ever.
